Silicon Nitride Ceramic:

The molecular formula of silicon nitride is Si3N4, which belongs to the compound of covalent bond. The silicon nitride ceramic is polycrystalline material, and the crystal structure is hexagonal. It is generally divided into two crystal orientations, α and β, all of which are [SiN4]4-tetrahedron. The composition of the body, wherein β-Si3N4 has higher symmetry, smaller molar volume, thermodynamically stable phase in temperature, and α-Si3N4 is more kinetically generated. At high temperature (1400°C~1800°C), α phase A phase change occurs and becomes a β-type. This phase change is irreversible, so the α phase is favorable for sintering. Different crystal phases have different appearances of silicon nitride. α-Si3N4 is white or grayish white loose wool or needle-like body, and β-Si3N4 is darker in color, showing dense granular polyhedron or short prism, silicon nitride crystal. It must be transparent or translucent. The appearance of silicon nitride ceramics is gray, blue-gray to gray-black. It varies depending on the density and the case, and it also has other colors due to additives. The surface of the silicon nitride ceramic is polished to have a metallic luster.
